Mary Ellen Blue’s dream of opening a coffee shop of her own began in 2012, and last month that dream came to fruition with the opening of Cilla’s Coffeehouse in the heart of Norfolk Center.
Mary Ellen describes her business as a "coffee shop that happens to sell really great food" placing emphasis on her “perfect blend” of coffee. Cilla’s also has more than just a morning beverage for its customers with a working fireplace, large screen televisions, and a liquor license permitting customers to enjoy their visit in a variety of ways.
Named after her mother, Cilla's location is perfect for both residents and commuters. Right near the Norfolk Commuter Rail stop, Mary Ellen has a beverage cart set up on the train platform to provide commuters with the chance to grab a last minute pick me up on their way to work.
The future for Cilla’s Coffeehouse looks promising as Mary Ellen continues to come up with different ideas to make her business more engaging and welcoming to the community. In the upcoming months, Mary Ellen hopes to host open mic nights, art exhibits, game nights, and tea tastings, among others.
“From kicking back with a cup of tea by the fireplace, to having a beer and a sandwich while watching the game, Cilla’s Coffeehouse is the perfect place for residents of all ages to enjoy a fun and friendly social environment,” said Senator Ross. “I have no doubt that Mary Ellen will be extremely successful in her new endeavor and I hope you decide to stop by and check out this fantastic new small business in Norfolk.”
