The Norfolk and Wrentham Lions Clubs are sponsoring an April Fools Plunge at Sweatt Beach in Wrentham (Woolford Road), on Saturday April 1, at 11a.m. Registration is at 10 a.m. The fundraiser will benefit Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund (MLERF). MLERF’s mission is to fund grants for Massachusetts institutions performing research related to the prevention and cure of eye-related diseases.
The plunge into the frigid waters of Lake Pearl was first raised as an idea by the Norfolk Lions to aid MLERF and expanded to the Wrentham Lions Club to extend the reach of fundraising efforts. Each “Plunger” will attempt to attract “Sponsors” to donate money to try to warm their hearts before the freezing waters chill their bones. The Lions will welcome any and all to be a “Plunger” and encourage the public to come to the event and raise everyone’s temperature. Forms are located at the Wrentham Cooperative Bank at 102 South Street, Wrentham. Hot Cocoa and soup will be available to all, especially for the poor souls jumping into Lake Pearl.
Lions Clubs International, the largest volunteer organization in the world – with over 1.4 million members in 46,000 clubs, is celebrating its Centennial. Lions are “Knights of the Blind” and support thousands of different local initiatives each year. Our motto is “We Serve” MLERF has helped to establish three major research centers in Boston: the Howe Laboratory at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center, and the Lions Laboratory for Genetic Research at Schepens Eye Research Institute.
MLERF awards nearly $1 million in grants annually, funded completely by donations to our giving campaigns. Since 1951 we have provided grants totaling over $32 million. Questions or comments, please contact Steve Langley at 508-404-8682 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
