After reviewing a question we discussed at last night’s forum regarding the length of the relief provided by the debt exclusion, it occurred to me that there may be some additional clarification needed. The ballot question does not seek eight years of additional taxes for one year of relief. It seeks eight years of additional taxes for eight years of relief. The debt exclusion provides $1M of relief to the operating budget for FY2012. It provides slightly declining relief for each of the following seven years (by about $26K for seven years and then $243K in the eighth and last year.) So the increase in taxes supports that each year. The proposal is not 8 years of additional taxes for 1 year of additional revenue – it’s 8 years of additional taxes for 8 years of additional revenue.
