Former Red Sox pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd will lead the Wrentham Warriors against a Quebec All-Star Team May 25-26 to raise funds for the Marathon bombing victims. The Wrentham Warriors posted a 24-4 record in 2012, in attaining their first championship title in the RIMA Over-50 Baseball League.
Local ballplayers on the Warriors include Mike McDermott, Mike Luce, Mike Trudeau, Mike Rogers (Wrentham), Mike AuCoin (Plainville), George McNellage, Scott Mason (Franklin), Mike Sutherland (Bellingham) and Manager Harvey Stone (Norfolk).
The Montreal Memorial Day weekend series will be played at Gary Carter Field and is expected to be picked up by ESPN Montreal.
The two games, planned several months ago, have been converted into fundraisers at the insistence of the Canadian hosts. “Initially the game was supposed to be for a case of beer and bragging rights, but given the location of the visiting team, it seems only fitting that we donate the entire proceeds to Boston area groups,” said John Vergados, a member of the hosting Montreal team.
"This is just one more example of the fundamental goodness of Canadiens, who, as in the aftermath of 9/11, showed what great people, and great allies, they are," said Wrentham Team Captain Stone.
The Warriors hope to host Montreal next year in a home-and-home series.
