Schilling Visits Baseball and Softball Players

Curt Schilling visited Wrentham today, fulfilling an agreement to eat pizza with every player that participated in the Longest Game and raised more than $250. The pizza party was held in the Delaney Cafeteria with over a100 children and their guests having the chance to dine with the legendary Red Sox hurler.

Despite the fact Schilling arrived wearing a Medfield jacket the crowd was thrilled to see the man known for clutch pitching performances, the bloody sock, and reversing the curse. The Longest Game, a record breaking 36 hour baseball marathon held this past June, rallied the community together to raise more than $60,000 for multiple local and national charities including Curt's Pitch for ALS. Curt accepted a check for $19,000 from the Wrentham Youth Baseball and Softball League. His charity helps support ALS Association's four New England Chapters in their efforts to find a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis as well as help patients and families dealing with the disease.

Record Set in Stone

The record setting Longest Baseball Game has undoubtedly been imprinted permanently into the memories of its participants and now it is indelibly etched into the very site of the great game. The large green painted rock marking the entrance to Sweatt Field has a new look thanks to Tribute In Stone. Todd and Shila Duffy, the owners of the memorial company, donated their company's services to create a permanent commemoration of the record breaking Longest Baseball Game.

 

 

The Duffy’s, whose  three children helped set the record, first approached Jim Lucas, game coordinator, Terry McGovern, president of Wrentham Youth Baseball Softball Association,  and Jeff Plympton, recreation director for the town, about the tribute.  It took over a month to coordinate the engraving, working with a stone cutter, a writer, and the company’s designer. The Longest Game was a “wonderful community event and even though it was held in June, it continues to have an effect on our community in positive ways,” Duffy said citing the money raised and distributed to local charities and the upcoming dinner with Curt Schilling for the top fundraisers. 

 

Tribute In Stone is a Wrentham business located on South Street  at Wampum Corner.  It provides granite cemetery memorials, benches and signs.
