Doug Williams, director at Mass. Audubon Stony Brook, will lead the walk and demonstrate centuries-old navigation methods perfected long before the age of GPSs and smartphones.
Williams will discuss how to compare the landscape with topographic maps. Navigating from point to point, the group will explore the historic landscape while discussing how to use a map and compass to determine location and lines of travel. Along the way, Williams will teach finding tricks like taking advantage of “catching features” and “aiming off”.
The walk is open to the public. Please bring a compass if you have one. Meet on Sunday, January 28, 10 a,m. in the Birchwold parking lot. Walk is scheduled 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dress for the weather. Birchwold Conservation Area is located 300 feet northeast from where West Street and Route 121 separate.
